Developed in 1995 by the Galfan Corporation, this wire coating contains a mixture of 95% zinc and 5% aluminum and offers all the benefits of galvanized wire including its galvanic properties including the corrosion resistance properties of aluminum.
GALFAN gives approximately 1.5 to 4 times the durability of a pure zinc coating. The improved durability is attributable to the presence of the aluminium which has greater resistance to corrosion. The zinc corrosion rate is higher that leaves an aluminium rich surface and provides enhanced protection to a gabion.
The coating weight applied is equivalent to the coating weights specified in BS443 for zinc coating before fabrication. The coating is applied to the wire prior to fabrication and goes through a wiping process which gives it a smooth coating as opposed to the hot dip process after manufacture (BS729). Claims of heavier minimum coating weights should be viewed with caution as they are difficult to achieve with any consistency.
